May 18, 2014

Changed my entire focus to my Capstone project from improving work processes and enhancing communication to developing fall prevention guidelines for the older adult.  I recognized (after 200 hours of clinical learning) I have minimal to no control over enhancing communication or giving staff a voice in work processes under the thumb of an authoritative leader.  Still today the NM "dismisses" me in one form or another and I don't have the energy to continue under duress.

Rather, I'll focus on what I know and what I'm good at; fall prevention.  I have 6 years worth of fall data for the entire system and will use this data for comparison following implementation of evidence based fall prevention guidelines beginning in long term care and a patient population vulnerable to falls and fall related injuries.

Over the next 12 weeks I hope to post one story each week as it relates to my learning experience.  To reflect yes but also, to identify one valley I crossed by sharing evidence or facilitated evidence at the bedside.

Let's see what happens.

This is my very first time using my blog.  Blogging is very new to me and I'm gonna do my best to document my learning experiences.

Thus far, my learning experience in the Community Living Center have been very rewarding; staff have been very receptive to my help them identify the underlying causes to patient falls.  We've been meeting routinely and I've sat a few one on one to gather an idea of their needs.

Plans:  work on CLC needs assessment.  Submit survey to get to the depth of the issues to help improve workflow and work processes, and ultimately patient safety.

Reminder to myself:  blog!!!!
